Another great band to see, though of a different vibe, with a stand up drummer - The Almighty Senators out of the DC area (?). When I saw them, it was @ a pseudo-lingere/fashion show for charity, and everyone was supposed to dress the part. I recall the drummer was in purple silk pajamas. hah!

Now I've gotta go look them up...

Edit: Memory coming back online. Add also The Kelly Bell Band. though no stand up drummer.

Cool--I'm glad people out there liked it. A lot of people don't think of the Mothers of Invention as being a 60's band, but they had some great 60's albums like "Absolutely Free" and "We're Only In It For The Money" (which poked fun at The Beatles Sgt. Pepper--speaking of "Beatles meet the Mothers of Invention"). It even had a cover that was a parody of Sgt. Pepper--here are the covers of the two albums (click for full size) .....

I think they were supporting the Elemental release, or it was just prior to that.

Jellyfish was a pleasant surprise as the opening act. The GF at the time was into them, and I by proxy. Not followed since. They certainly didn't get enough credit at the time though.

I went, expecting TFF (in a nutshell) to be everything synth-drums and samples that I didn't care for about the 80's. Curt Smith had departed, so knowledge of band-trauma further lowered expectations for the tunes I thought I'd wanted to hear.

In fact however, the stage/lighting was innovative and attractive, and the sound the best I'd heard to date (alas no recollection of the gear or company). Roland Orzabal was no squeaky guy behind a keyboard (that'd've been Smith anyway I think) , but instead a humbucking Tele (?) toting freight train of a tenor with unexpected vocal power and endurance. He actually hits the notes, did so well, and professionally.

It was much less compressed, and falsetto-ish, than you might expect having heard the earlier hits.

    * In web-hindsight, it appears he has had a rep as a perfectionist - well, whatever it was, it worked.

    Highlight: famous last words.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to see Jellyfish live (would have loved to see them tour with TFF). I did, however, finally see Tears For Fears live for the first time this past summer, in Lockport New York (near Niagara Falls). Curt Smith is back in the band and they did a lot of great songs off of the "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" album plus a good mix of their other stuff too (and of course, their obligatory hits). Amazing band/performance and both Curt and Roland were in excellent voice. Here's the setlist: Tears for Fears Concert Setlist at Ulrich City Centre, Lockport on August 13, 2010 | setlist.fm

Great video by the 70's Mothers of Invention. The musicianship in that band is unbelievable--Chester Thompson-drums, George Duke-synth, Ruth Underwood-vibes, to name just a few.....

Don't forget Lowell George [earlier] (who deserves a listing of his own IMO).

    Bob Dylan, from Brownsville Girl
